Chapter I
Mercenaries
"Hmph, little good this will do us! Many hard knocks, and little reward for it! Ah well…" So muttered Charles one day as he slowly landed on an intergalactic starship of the Nova League. He was commissioned to beat the Terran empire in acquiring certain of the Nova League's associates as mercenaries, and was about to interview one of their most dangerous and well know members, know to most as the audacious Admiral Red Hawk. He had been know to murder many or all of the crews of any ship which fell into his hands, and for all the Centuri knew was already in a secret alliance with the Terran Empire, however as he was extremely influential in the League and would be of vast aid to anyone with whom he allied himself the Centuri's commander took his chances with the powerful commander. Indeed it would be more correct to say that Charles took his chances, but to do the Centuri's generals justice, the loss of one of their bravest men when brave men were most needed was not desirable and they chose him as their ambassador only because of his coolness.
"The admiral will see you below with one of his men. Just follow me," a man said to him as he exited the spaceship's exposed landing area. The fellow led him below and told him the admiral would be there directly. Charles looked around. The place was clearly a storage area, apparently for weapons as some torpedoes and other weapons of war were visible. "A quire place to meet an admiral," Charles said to himself gazing out of a widow which showed him bright stars in the distance. He heard footsteps and looked up. "Good to have you here," the admiral remarked in casual sarcasm, "what do your fat Centuri generals need from me?" "I see you are disposed to mock them, well would you fare if you allied with them instead, take care that you do not bite the hand that would feed you!" replied Charles. "Would feed me indeed! Well at the present I feed myself, but I foresee the advantages of an alliance." "Yes, there are of course advantages and on both sides too, money for you, men and weapons for us." Charles produced glimmering gold coins, "one of these for every spaceship with a man and weapons." A little more talking and they agreed on a price and Charles then took his leave carefully watching against foul play. However he was soon speeding away having completed his mission. "Ha! That was simpler then I expected! Indeed, it was too simple, what can he mean by it…"
