Here's my second free build, introducing Cathlyn's rival Zane "Shadow" Cross. He'll play an important role later in Cathlyn's story.
Leaving the military complex, Cathlyn decided to have a look around in the Terran capital. It sure was interesting and might have been very impressive for ordinary people. Cathlyn however, was not impressed at all. This city was weak. An assassin could hide anywhere. Any terrorist attack would have been successful. People were not aware of anything and not even armed. That was why she liked planets controlled by the Nova League so much. People were much more aware of their surroundings and all of them had some protection at hand. Yet, the low security standards had an advantage for her. There was a lot to be heard about the upcoming war and some of it would even have been considered classified information outside of Terran territory. Cathlyn took a speeder bus ride to the lower levels of the city and entered one of a few rather shady bars. This was the perfect place to learn something new about the Terran strategies and recent developments, since many soldiers spent their free time in bars like this. In fact she couldn’t even keep track of everything she heard, since there was just too much interesting stuff discussed by them. She activated recording mode on her neural implant to make sure she did not miss anything and could later listen to it again. Just as she turned to the counter to talk to the old bar keeper, she hear a loud laugh from behind, much to her dismay. „My, oh my, ain’t that you Cathlyn? What a pleasant surprise…!“ She resisted the sudden urge to spin around punch the man in the face. Instead, she turned around slowly, carefully placing her hand on the holster of her gun. „Zane…I did not think you were still around.“ Usually she knew all to well about his whereabouts, but there was no point in letting the man know. She would never trust this guy again. Just as herself, he was a member of the Nova League, but unlike her he did not really honor the code. He was grinning from ear to ear, as he took a few steps towards the counter. „You are not still mad at me, aren’t you?“, he said, visibly amused. Oh, he had no idea. The last time he had grinned like this, he had been close to testing the sharpness of her sword the hard way. He owed his life to the code and Cathlyn’s respect for it. „Come on, we are playing for the same team…especially with a war around the corner.“, he continued. „I am not on a team.“ Cathlyn replied, „And I doubt there will ever be any kind of we for us.“. „Oh, come on, don’t be so dramatic about it… Barkeeper ! Bring that lady one of your best drinks…and a whole bottle for me !“. „Why are you here, Zane ?“, Cathleen asked in an icey voice. „Not for the purpose of drinking alone, if that is your question. And I was going to ask you the same. Because, if you are coming for a contract, there is none, not anymore anyway. But I don’t think it would interest you…or maybe it would…“, his grin has gotten even bigger while saying this. „Spit it out, Zane, who is the target.“ She had a bad feeling about this. „ Cathlyn the Hunter, never a friend of small talk…well, the target is Jorik Kavas, but you don’t need to bother looking for him. The contract is exclusively for me. 500.000 credits straight. Best deal ever.“ Wait, what? That could not be! This was her target and she had gotten the exclusive contract ! What game was Zane playing here? How did he even know? She had purged the systems of her trace, as always and no one had followed her, still he was here. „Look, Zane, you may think you are funny, but you are not. You are wasting my time.“ She had to go, now! She had to get to Kavas before Zane or anyone else, who might also have received a exclusive contract got there first. Kavas had questions to answer, and corpses usually did not answer questions too well. „Why so hasty ?“, Zane asked, still grinning. He had emptied his first glass already and was pouring more liquor from the bottle. Cathlyn had not even taken a single sip. there was no point in drinking, especially on enemy territory. She should have killed Zane on the spot. He was not only annoying and had dishonored the code, but he was also a danger to her mission. He was good at his trade. Maybe not just on her level, but good enough to follow any trail and hunt down any target. He was not called „Shadow“ without reason. But she could not take care of him right now, right here. The rules of the League forbid it. Also she could not risk being arrested by the Terran police. If more hunters were going for Kavas’ head, she had to be quick. „You know what, have your hunt, Zane! Go after him! But don’t think your contract will stay exclusive for too long. There is a war coming and soon any hunter will be chasing Centuri Generals.“ Without further hesitation, she turned to the door and left, leaving Zane’s grin behind. It was time to hunt !
I hope you like it ! Stay tuned for more !
