When last we left off with Oren, he and an injured Lemna were rescued by Mero and his squad...
Some time later, Oren was finally allowed to visit Lemna at the base hospital. Lemna was being tended to by a Sequai doctor and his trusty medical drone. She seemed a lot better, which made Oren glad since he had some tough news to deliver and she'd already been through a lot.
The news is that he's being recruited as the pilot for one of the tactical squads that operate from Theris. They had both been up for the position, with the testflight of the Cub being one of the last steps. With Lemna wounded, the spot has been offered to Oren.
"I'm sorry, but their hands are tied. I thought I should let you know personally," Oren said.
"I don't blame them. Look at me? Stuck in here probably for another month or two. They have to take someone, right?" Lemna replied. There was sadness in her voice, a kind of defeated tone that Oren couldn't reconcile with the Lemna he knew. A woman who's favorite phrase when things got tough was "throw some dirt on it!".
"I wish things could have been different, though. You deserved a full shot," he managed to say.
"I don't blame you, either. You saved my life."
Oren became quiet. Eventually, he mumbled an excuse and took his leave. He told Lemna he'd see her again, check up on her, and he meant it. If there was any way he could help her get back into the mix when she was well, he planned to do it. It was hard seeing her this way. She was so fierce and determined. He hoped she'd be that way again.
